Description:
The landscape oil sketch first appeared in British art in the 177os and flourished during the first two decades of the nineteenth century, pioneered by J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. By the i8ios the widespread habit of painting in oil and watercolour from nature had led some British landscape painters to aspire to create a direct naturalism of a kind unprecedented in the history of British art, though by the 1820s the practice of taking oil paints into the countryside had effectively disappeared. This book explores the development, variety and innovation of this important phenomenon. Taking oil paints into the countryside was something very new for British art. So were the ways in which Regency artists pursued this type of study. These departures are explored in detail here by art historians Michael Rosenthal and Anne Lyles, alongside full-colour illustrations of ninety oil paintings from Tate's substantial collection.
